You are invited to come to Dumfries from the 7th to 10th August, 2009 and discover the Borderland - the South of Scotland and the North of England. A beautiful land of mountains, rivers and lochs, with coastal villages, bustling market towns, and peaceful farmland.
This area of the country has been missed by so many tourists, rushing north on the motorway or across to the ferry at Stranraer for Ireland. Those who stop are enchanted - the real Scotland without the long journey to the Highlands - golf courses galore from championship level to small, friendly courses, all with beautiful settings by the sea, lochs, or with stunning views over the hills. The quiet country roads are to be driven along at a leisurely pace, and cyclists are specially catered for with marked routes and cycle paths.
But it is the cultural heritage that makes this country very special. For four days, the Border Gathering will show you this culture - the music in many forms - the dance, both present and past - the Games, a trial of strength for the chief to choose his strongest men for defence. You will learn some of the fascinating history, and visit the beautiful countryside and castles and mansions of bonnie Galloway. This is the land of the Border Reiver, the home of many clans and families. Is your name there?
Modern day clans, at peace with each other, and ready to welcome guests, will be at the Gathering Day. You may book each day and event seperately, but the 4 day package gives you the complete experience with all transport provided.
Today, the descendants, still living in the borderlands, tell with pride the story of the life of their ancestors in those harsh times. If you have a border name, this is also your story. Whatever your name, prepare to be enthralled. More exciting than Hollywood could ever imagine!
